Dairy cattle’s farming is one of the pillars of the agricultural economy. Increasing the rate of involuntary culling is an important issue in cattle breeding. The objective of this study was to determine the nature and the frequency of the diseases responsible for dairy cows killing in Mostaganem province.
This is a retrospective longitudinal epidemiological study. This preliminary study was carried out at the slaughterhouse of Tigditt-Mostaganem during the period between January 1st and December 31st, 2019. The animals received at this slaughterhouse came from several localities of Mostaganem province.
In total, 116 dairy cows were slaughtered during this study. A total of 19 diseases were detected in this study. The results obtained showed that the main pathology encountered was chronic mastitis followed by infertility problems, brucellosis and displacement of the abomasum. Respiratory diseases were less represented in the present study.
In conclusion, this study provided some information on the most important reasons for the increase of dairy cows culling in cattle farms of Mostaganem province. An effective control plan need to be adopted in order to control these pathologies at the level of cattle farms and to decrease the economic losses linked to the involuntary culling of breeding cows |
