Since researchers practice transgenesis, many genes have been discovered by the loss of their functions and the Klotho gene is one of them. The regulation of this gene allows it to express itself by giving a protein in three forms, a transmembrane and the other two soluble. This gene is mainly active in the cells of the brain and the kidneys, but through its Klotho protein in soluble form, which behaves like a hormone, it intervenes in the regulation of many functions, the resulting effects of which are anti-aging. Among the biological functions involving the Klotho protein, there is protection against oxidative stress, inflammation, cellular senescence and apoptosis. In the medical field, the Klotho protein has proven to be a good marker in the prognosis, diagnosis and also the treatment of diseases such as CKD. This protein also seems to be a good candidate for therapy against certain cancers. The use of this gene in medicine is directed towards two strategies, gene therapy or Klotho protein supplementation |
