Abstract
The Mediterranean Sea, a semi-enclosed basin characterized by huge number of industries and the
accumulation of small and large plastic waste, which is a problem in all Oceans and Seas of the
world. Algeria, a developing country, has not been aware of the plastic pollution occurring in its
coastal waters. For that reason, we carried out a study on the coast of Mostaganem, in two sites
(Stidia beach and Salamandre cove). The sampling was carried out using a MP 350 microplastic
collector designed and constructed by Prof. N. Taibi and a fisher boat. The results show an obvious
presence of micro and macroplastics. The comparison between the study sites indicates that the
waters of Stidia beach are more polluted with plastics than Salamandre cove.
