Bovine brucellosis is an infection that poses an economic and global public health problem, especially in the countries of the Mediterranean basin. It generally affects cows during the breeding period. In Algeria, despite the control programs adopted by the state, bovine brucellosis remains enzootic. This epidemiological study was carried out in order to determine the seroprevalence and distribution of bovine brucellosis in Mostaganem province and to evaluate the control program implemented in this region.
This is a retrospective epidemiological study on 842 farms visited by the veterinary services during the period from January 01, 2018 to December 31, 2019. Blood samples were collected in order to evaluate the individual serological status by using two serological tests (rose Bengal test and complement fixation test).
The results obtained showed that the screening rate is very low in the study area and that the seroprevalence of bovine brucellosis is variable during the study period. In addition, the disease was detected in 15 cities and the high number of brucellosis cases was recorded in kheireddine city.
In conclusion, brucellosis remains a major animal and public health problem in Algeria with a considerable economic impact; hence further efforts in strengthening the program are becoming necessary in order to combat this zoonosis. |
