Rearing insects such as the larvae of the Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia Illucens) offers an effective solution for preventing disease, reducing the use of antibiotics and improving the quality of animal products. These larvae, also known as Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL), are used in agriculture for composting and organic waste management, enabling the production of insect proteins and fats for animal feed.
In this context, it is imperative to put in place adequate control measures to maintain the conditions essential for breeding, including humidity, temperature and feeding.
As part of the study carried out in the Applied Animal Physiology Laboratory, we used a humidity and temperature sensor, together with a Raspberry Pi 4 as a control center, a humidifier and a resistor to monitor the rearing of black soldier fly larvae (LMSN). The sensor was placed in the rearing environment to provide real-time measurements of humidity and temperature levels, enabling us to closely monitor the environmental conditions to which the larvae were exposed. For parameter control, we set up an automated control system.
The prototype system, based on the Raspberry Pi 4, can control the environmental conditions to which the larvae are exposed during rearing. |
