Sweet pepper cultivation is an important agricultural sector, especially under protected cropping systems. To reduce the significant damage caused by aphids, major pests of this crop, this study focused on evaluating hoverflies (Syrphidae) as biological control agents. However, unfavorable climatic conditions during the experimental period limited direct observations, leading to a comparative analysis based on three previous studies. These studies revealed that although hoverflies have notable predatory potential, their actual effectiveness remains limited. They are highly sensitive to climatic factors, and their late appearance in the crop undermines their regulatory role against aphid populations. These findings highlight that the mere presence of hoverflies is not sufficient for effective and sustainable aphid control, and that synchronization with pest population peaks or additional interventions may be required. |
