Abstract
Acute myeloid leukemia in adolescents and young adults (AYA) is a highly aggressive blood cancer that affects the bone marrow and disrupts normal blood cell production. In this study, we investigated the potential association between the IL23R gene polymorphism rs11209026 (Arg381Gln) and the development of AML in the AYA population of Western Algeria.
The study included 12 AML-AYA patients and 15 healthy controls. DNA samples were provided by the Laboratory of Molecular and Cellular Genetics (LGMC), extracted, and analyzed using real-time PCR (TaqMan technique), a sensitive method based on the use of specific fluorescent probes
The results of the statistical analysis showed a high prevalence of the juvenile form of leukemia in Algeria, with very high blast cell rates (>50%).
Statistical analysis did not reveal any significant association between the studied polymorphism and the disease. Therefore, although the IL23R gene is known for its role in several inflammatory diseases and cancers, our findings suggest that it is not directly associated with the development of AML in adolescents and young adults from Western Algeria.
