Résumé:
The East Coast of Mostaganem presents enormous opportunities allowing a decent socio-economic
development. The main activity is agriculture thanks to the availability of fertile land and the
presence of water. Fishing activities are centred on small trades who use the beaches and the unic
available of the region (port of Sidi Lakhdar). Aquaculture is a gainful activity, however it finds
difficulties to be established in this Province. The present study is centered on the eco-systemic
contribution of artisanal fishing in this coastal area. To collect information directly from the local
population, questionnaires have been developed by targeting not only the fishermen but also the
officials and citizens of Ben Abdelmalek Ramdane, Hadjadj and Ouled Boughalem (sampling of
120 persons). The results highlight that the studied municipalities present weaknesses in terms of
development of the artisanal fishing and other activities such as recreation and seaside tourism; both
could contribute to the creation of wealth. These activities could be an indirectly economic
advantage for the fishermen because they will have the possibility to better market their products on
the spot. The majority of interviewed people is favourable to the development of activities
throughout the year and not limited to the summer season whose duration is less than three months.
