إن تحقيق التنمية المكانية يتطلب معرفة البنية الاقتصادية للموقع وهذا لتحديد العوامل الاقتصادية الموقعية الكفيلة بتحقيق النمو والتنمية الاقتصادية المكانية، فدراسة هذه العوامل يستوجب تطبيق الطرق والتقنيات الكمية والتي تساهم في عملية تخطيط استغلال الموارد الاقتصادية من أجل التخصيص الأمثل وتحقيق أكبر قدر من التنسيق فيما بينها بغية تحقيق التنمية المكانية المتوازنة والتقليل من التباين التنموي والفوارق المكانية. إن تطبيق أسلوب التحليل العنقودي على المؤشرات الاقتصادية والاجتماعية المكانية قد يساعد في إبراز العديد من التفاعلات مابين المتغيرات للظواهر الاقتصادية والتي تساعد الأطراف الفاعلة في تخطيط العمل التنموي، توطين النشاطات الاقتصادية وتوجيه السياسات التنموية المكانية بأكبر فاعلية ورشادة اقتصادية.
