Humor and The Flouting of Gricean Maxims in “Sultan Achour El-Acher” Sitcom

Abstract

The planned abandonment of the principle of cooperation defined by Grice (1975) raises implications that play a role in the creation of humor, leading to the non-respect of maxims. The purpose of this article is to discover these flutes that occur in the sitcom "Achour El-Acher" by seeking which of the maxims is not respected, why the meaning of the statements of the characters is involved and which of the maxims is most scorned . Data collection was done by viewing sitcom episodes, and the analysis was conducted using qualitative and quantitative methods. Research has shown that sitcom characters flout the four maxims and dominate the qualitative maxim caused by the use of irony, metaphors and sarcasm.
