Bilingualism in Algeria

Abstract

Bilingualism is an international phenomenon that prevails in different parts of the world and has an influence on people's lives and means of communication. Its existence in a given society can be detected through different aspects, especially at school. Therefore, this research is an attempt to see if bilingualism predominates in a given region. To this end, two primary schools, namely primary schools Ould Aoudia and Ibn Batouta. In the district of Raisinville, Mostaganem were selected to investigate this problem. The students, who studied Arabic and French with their teachers, were chosen for this research. Three hypotheses have been brought to light: bilingualism exists in some districts, but not in others, and the underlying reasons are socio-economic, or bilingualism does not exist at all in Mostaganem and the underlying reasons are also socio-economic. With regard to the methodology, the qualitative approach was chosen with observation as the main data collection tool. The results showed that the representative sample was not bilingual due to socio-economic factors, given that Raisinville is a popular neighborhood.
