Environmental monitoring and risk prevention are being greatly impacted by the advancements in satellite imaging technologies derived from remote sensing. Monitoring the Earth's surface dynamics relies heavily on time series of images, whether optical or radar. They are particularly useful for detecting, characterizing, and tracking the progression of rapid phenomena, such as forest fires. The use of this data allows for the analysis of environmental indicators, identification of areas at risk, and observation of fires' spatiotemporal evolution from their onset through their spread. Their role is crucial when it comes to improving early warning and fire response strategies. The aim of this project is to extract meaningful information from satellite images (Sentinel-2 API), both optical and radar, in order to develop a texture analysis tool designed to improve the detection and monitoring of forest fires. The design and development of this tool can be done either from scratch or with the help of existing libraries and tools, particularly in Python. The main challenge is to use this tool to analyze and categorize different types of land-cover imagery, which would help in understanding and managing fire phenomena in this context. Our project is structured around two main areas. A pre-processing stage is applied in the first step to improve image quality using spatial algorithms. The second concern pertains to the implementation of a detection and classification procedure that utilizes Artificial Intelligence methods (AI), particularly deep learning methods, to enhance the recognition and classification of concerned areas. Keywords: Remote sensing, satellite imagery, convolutional neural networks (CNN), pre-processing, binary classification, detection. | |
