Abstract
In response to the growing demand for white meat in Algeria and the country's heavy reliance on imported feed ingredients, this study evaluated the use of whole oats as a partial substitute for maize in broiler chicken diets.
The experiment was conducted on a commercial poultry farm located in Aïn Nouissy (Mostaganem), using 300 COBB 500 broiler chicks divided into three groups: a control group fed a standard diet, a second group in which 10% of the maize was replaced with whole oats, and a third group in which 20% of the maize was replaced with whole oats. Whole oats were introduced into the diet from day 15 until slaughter at 45 days of age.
The results showed that replacing 10% of the maize with whole oats maintained zootechnical performance comparable to that of the control group. In contrast, a 20% replacement level resulted in reduced weight gain and slower growth. Furthermore, increasing the inclusion level of whole oats lowered feed costs, representing a potential economic advantage.
