Abstract
Environmental microbiology describes the relationship between microorganisms and their
environment.
Microorganisms include bacteria, fungi, algae, and yeast. Each category is characterized by
a classification based on several parameters, such as morphology and anatomy. Bacterial
morphology refers to the shape of bacterial cells, their dimensions, and their arrangements.
As for anatomy, it illustrates the various organelles that make up a bacterium, such as the
flagella, the capsule, the cell wall, the cytoplasmic membrane, and the cytoplasm. Thus,
each component plays a role in the life cycle of bacteria. The bacterial cell is composed of
organic and inorganic matter, represented by the formula C5H7O2N. Microorganisms need
basic elements such as water, nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus, minerals, and specific elements
for their growth. Their study is based on sampling and microscopic observation.
Microorganisms are found in all ecosystems: in the soil, in aquatic environments, in the air,
and in wastewater. They play a very important role in the environment, such as in the
nitrogen (N), carbon (C), oxygen (O), sulfur (S), and phosphorus (P) cycles. Bacteria have
the ability to break down proteins into amino acids, carbohydrates into sugars, and lipids
into fatty acids (CH3-(CH2)n-COOH). Cellulosic waste and hydrocarbons are also
biodegraded by specific strains of bacteria and fungi. For each compound, biodegradation
occurs in several stages. The degradation process is known as enzymology, characterized
by enzyme kinetics (the Michaelis-Menten hypothesis), which studies the rate of chemical
or biochemical reactions in which the enzyme (E) converts the substrate (S) into a product
(P) without altering the equilibrium state.
