Several investigations have focused on essential oils extracted from aromatic plants. The
various published results indicate that they have several biological properties. In this context, we evaluated in vitro the antimicrobial activity of Artemisia Herba alba essential oils from the Bechar region (Meridja) on the growth of meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
The essential oils extracted from Artemisia Herba alba by the hydrodistillation technique
showed a yield close to 1,491%.
In contrast, plant phytochemical screening results revealed the plant’s richness in different groups of secondary metabolites such as, alkaloids, gallic tannins, flavonoids, saponosides, the
heterosides and the coumarines.
The study of antimicrobial activity by aromatogram showed that the essential oil of
Artemisia Herba alba exerts a strong activity against the three strains studied: S. aureus ATCC 6538, S. aureus isolated from a skin wound, and S. aureus isolated from an ECBU with
inhibition zones of 9mm, 26mm and 14mm respectively.
The diameters of the inhibition zones obtained by the meticillin test for S. aureus ATCC 6538, S. aureus isolated from a skin wound, and S. aureus isolated from an ECBU are 15mm,
27mm and 30mm, respectively.
In addition, the microplate method yielded the MICs for S. aureus ATCC 6538, S. aureus
isolated from a skin wound, and S. aureus isolated from an ECBU with values of 0,625%;
0.625% and 1.25% respectively and values ranging from 5%, 5% and 5% respectively for CMB. |
