The experimental study is devoted to the evaluation of the antimicrobial effects of the hydroethanolic solvent extract of miswak (Salvadora percica) collected in the ARAK region in Ain Salah-Algeria on certain pathogenic microorganisms responsible for oral infections. The Miswak extract was obtained by macerating an intake of the plant in aqueous ethanol, followed by filtration and evaporation of the filtrate. The extract was concentrated in 0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100% distilled water. The antimicrobial effect of Miswak extract has been tested on two microorganisms: C.albicans and S.aureus. The measurements concerned: the growth test, the disk diffusion test, the minimum inhibitory concentration, the minimum bactericidal concentration and the minimum fungicidal concentration.
Solutions of S.percica extract produced strong antimicrobial activity in S. aureus and C.albicans.
Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Fungicidal Concentration (CMF) were achieved in Candida albicans at 40% miswak extract. In contrast, in S.aureus, the MIC and minimum bactericidal concentration (CMB) were recorded at 80 extract of the plant studied.
Furthermore, the Miswaka extract showed a bactericidal-like action in Staphylococcus aureus and a fungicidal-like action in Candida albicans. |
