dc.description.abstract Royal Jelly has been used in traditional medicine since antiquity in various therapies. The objective of this study is to evaluate the gastro protective effect of royal jelly in rats. A total of 30 female rats of Wistar strain were divided into 6 groups of 5 rats each, Control (T) and Ulcerative (U) batches were given distilled water. Ulcerative batches are treated with the aqueous solution of Royal Jelly at three doses 150 mg/kg, 300 mg/kg, 500 mg/kg (U-D1, U-D2), U-D3) respectively, and standard batch omeprazole at (30mg/kg), intra-gastrically for 8 days. To induce ulcer formation, the animals received 1 ml of ulcerate solution (0.6 M Hcl/80% ethanol) intra-gastrically after fasting for 24 hours, except for the Control group. Macroscopic (ulcer index and percentage of protection), biochemical (Ph and volume) and histological study were performed. The results showed highly significantly decreased rates of ulcer index in the groups treated with Royal Jelly solutions at 300mg/kg and 500mg/kg compared to the ulcer group (U), however the group treated with Omeprazole a (30mg/kg) and Royal Jelly at 150mg/kg gave significant values. The values of stomach acidity (pH and volume) obtained in the groups treated with different doses of Royal Jelly (U-D1, U-D2 and U-D3), and the group treated with the drug (STD) (omeprazole 30mg/kg), are relatively close to the control group (T). Histopathological examination revealed a progressive protection of the gastric mucosa represented by the reduction of induced lesions, bleeding, vascular congestion. This study demonstrated the gastro-protective potential of Royal Jelly solutions, which could be exploited in the development of new Api-therapeutic formulations against gastric ulcer. en_US
