Financial Abuse of Working Women in Algeria

Abstract

This dissertation aims to look deeply in the daily life of any Algerian working woman, I investigated the obstacles that she faces with the complete dominance of the males in the Algerian society; starting with her independence with her own salary ,and balancing between her job and parental duty towards her children mainly and finishing with the view of the society to her. This research aims to investigate the problem in the Algerian society, the main reasons behind the problem and the solution of this issue. Previous studies has shown that this issue of preventing women from working has started in Algeria with the 1980’s. Literature on the financial discrimination against working women in Algeria has focused on the abuse of women physically and emotionally. Questionnaires are used to collect as much data from the participants as possible about the abuse and discrimination of these working women, and the daily struggle each female goes throw, the asked questions are all about the financial independence and the cost of being a woman in a patriarchal society. the study results have shown that working women in Algeria do suffer from being financially and emotionally abused by their husbands, as well as emotionally abused. The Algerian authority makes it very clear by establishing the family code and illustrating the articles that demonstrate the exploitation of women and the women financial abuse are illegal. Furthermore, The Islamic religion also gives her freedom to dispose her money or give it to her husband willingly and not by force. To solve the problem of the financial abuse of working women in Algeria, the change should start from home by educating gender equality in rights and duties.
