Abstract

A mutation is an unforeseen event that causes a change in a hereditary trait. These occurrences are rare and often perceived as anomalies in the process. In this study, we used physical mutagens, ultraviolet (UV) light, to induce mutations in E. coli and Proteus mirabilis, in the absence of chemical mutagens. We found that prolonged UV exposure led to sensitivity and death of bacterial strains. In addition, antibiotic sensitivity tests performed before and after UV, exposure revealed increased resistance of bacteria to many antibiotics after this exposure. UV mutagenesis demonstrated the sensitivity and mortality of strains after prolonged UV exposure.
