Abstract
Lactic acid bacteria are well known for their probiotic properties and their ability to produce
antimicrobial compounds such as lactic acid, bacteriocins, and hydrogen peroxide. Urinary tract
infections (UTIs), mainly caused by Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis,
and Staphylococcus saprophyticus, represent a major public health concern due to their high
prevalence and increasing antibiotic resistance. This study aimed to evaluate the antagonistic
activity of Lactobacillus spp., Lactococcus lactis, and Streptococcus thermophilus against these
uropathogenic bacteria. The antagonistic activity was assessed using in vitro microbiological tests.
Among the strains studied, Lactococcus lactis exhibited the highest antagonistic activity against
some pathogenic bacteria. The results demonstrated variable inhibitory effects depending on the
bacterial strains tested, suggesting that lactic acid bacteria could serve as a promising natural
alternative for the prevention and control of urinary tract infections.
