Abstract

Cordyceps militaris, is a Chinese medicinal mushroom, traditionally used as antimicrobials, anti-inflammatories, antioxidants, anti-aging, immunomodulators and antitumors. The present study aims to study the anti-inflammatory effects of Cordyceps militaris. The experiments were carried out on the model of acute edema of the paw of mice induced by carrageenan. On this model we tested the aqueous extracts of Cordyceps militaris at doses of 100, 200 and 300mg/kg administered orally. Gavage was performed one hour before induction of acute inflammation with 1% carrageenan. In the other hand, the results obtained were compared with those of Diclofenac and those of physiological control. After oral administration of physiological saline, carrageenan significantly increases mice paw volume by 54.16 ± 2.35%; 44.60 ± 3.95% and 32.15 ± 3.70% respectively at 1h, 3h and 6h. Administration of Diclofenac (50mg/kg, oral) significantly prevents the increase in mice paw volume of 52.14 ± 4.40%; 8.61 ± 1.73% and 0.34 ± 0.42% respectively at 1h, 3h and 6h after administration of carrageenan. Oral administration of the aqueous extract of Cordyceps militaris at a dose of 100mg / kg significantly prevents acute paw edema of the mice after 1 h, 3h and 6h; the percentages of increase in the volume of the paw are respectively 45.62 ± 3.22%; 5.38 ± 2.25% and 0.34 ± 0.85%, at a dose of 200mg/kg 37.88 ± 2.87%; 3.13 ± 1.80% and 0.17 ± 0.42%. Similar results were obtained with the dose of 300mg/kg. The results of our study highlight the pharmacological basis of Cordyceps militaris in traditional medicine to prevent inflammatory processes.
