Purslane Portulaca oleracea L. is a plant that belongs to the Portulacaceae family, it’s used for its medicinal and nutritional properties. In this study, we were interested on the phytochemical study and antioxidant activity of this species seeds using a hydroethanolic extract; this extraction gave a yield of 4%. The phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids and catechic tannins; similarly, the absence of anthocyanins, saponosides, sterols and triterpenes. However, the results of the quantitative analysis indicated the presence of the polyphenols with a concentration of 146 ± 3.85 mg GAE/100g, the flavonoids with 83.46 ± 0.46 mg QE/100g, the condensed tannins at 30.93 ± 2.7 mg CE/100g and the hydrolysable tannins for 51.73± 15.52 mg TAE/100g. The evaluation of the antioxidant activity of hydro-ethanolic extract was tested using the DPPH free radical method; the results obtained demonstrated a good antioxidant activity with IC50 values of 4.11μg/ml and an inhibition percentage of 61.3%, which gives this plant a wide spectrum of important pharmacological and dietary food properties.en_US
