Abstract

Today the presentation of the architectural heritage in Algeria is a major issue, hence the colonial heritage of the 19th and 20th century is considered as one of the most important landmarks of our cities. This heritage occupies a significant part of our real estate park and contributes significantly to the definition of the urban image of our cities. The importance of the colonial heritage portfolio that Algeria possesses currently, in studies and research that are concerned about the characteristics and values of this heritage, its richness is evident in the architecture of the facades that are very decorated and embellished by architectural ornaments. Architectural ornaments represent a detail of the facade widely used in facades of colonial heritage. Our research is part of a reflection that aims to propose principles and steps, mentioned and organized for a guide for eventual recovery of architectural project of colonial ornaments of facades to be followed. This research is based on a theoretical basis that treats the definition of the concept of decoration and facade as a support for these architectural ornaments. The aim of this research is to try to address the lack of tools and methodologies included in a guide for the recovery of architectural ornaments of Mostaganem city center. All the results obtained during this research shows that the architectural ornaments are sensitive elements, and recovery requires the establishment of a guide that includes two steps: the first step contains the overall reading of the facade, while the second step is devoted to the analysis of ornaments in three phases: analysis in relation to its support (facade), an isolated analysis and the last phase an analysis based on these types of materials and pathologies
