Understanding recent climate change and variability is crucial, especially in arid and semi-arid areas. This makes it possible to anticipate potential impacts on the environment and societies, and to develop appropriate adaptation strategies. In our study, we examined changes in precipitation in west en Algeria. In-depth knowledge of the distribution of precipitation in time and space is vital to spot periods of drought that threaten agriculture, as well as to identify regions suitable or unfavorable for cultivation. Our research focused on the analysis of rainfall, a key element of the water balance. We used statistical methods to examine drought indicators and established a computer database to manage precipitation information. The indices calculated for different weather stations clearly indicate two distinct phases: one dry and the other wet. Although a general downward trend in precipitation was observed during the study period, this trend was interrupted by years of abundant precipitation in regions such as Tiaret and Saïda. It appears that the impact of drought intensifies as one move westward.en_US
