Stroke is a major public health issue and remains one of the leading causes of mortality and disability worldwide. This case-control study was conducted to evaluate oxidative status and lipid profile in stroke patients compared with healthy control subjects. The analyzed parameters included plasma and erythrocyte malondialdehyde, reduced glutathione, catalase activity, plasma vitamin C, and lipid profile. The results revealed an increase in plasma malondialdehyde levels in stroke patients, reflecting enhanced lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress. Increased levels of reduced glutathione and vitamin C were also observed, suggesting the activation of compensatory mechanisms aimed at limiting oxidative damage. In contrast, catalase activity was decreased, indicating impairment of enzymatic antioxidant defenses in response to excessive production of reactive oxygen species. Assessment of the lipid profile showed generally preserved values. Furthermore, the most common pathological antecedents among patients were diabetes mellitus and hypertension, both recognized as major risk factors for stroke. Overall, these findings demonstrate that stroke is associated with a disturbance of redox homeostasis characterized by increased oxidative stress and altered antioxidant defense mechanisms. This study highlights the importance of the combined assessment of oxidative stress biomarkers and lipid profile parameters for a better understanding of stroke pathophysiology and for improving prevention and management strategie.
