Intelligent Personalized Nutritional Assistance System Based on Consumers' Pathologies and Their Specific Needs

Abstract

Algeria has witnessed a notable increase in nutrition-related chronic diseases in recent years, including diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia, in a context characterized by changing dietary habits and the growing consumption of processed foods. In response to these public health challenges, improving the quality of nutritional information available to consumers has become a necessity. Within this framework, DZsain was developed as an innovative mobile application designed to help Algerian consumers assess the nutritional quality of local food products through GS1-13 barcode scanning or automatic recognition of nutritional labeling data. The application is based on the EWG Food Scores methodology, which evaluates products according to three main dimensions: nutritional quality, degree of food processing, and risks associated with ingredients and additives, thereby providing an overall assessment of their impact on health. DZsain also incorporates the concept of personalized nutrition by taking into account the user’s health profile, including diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, kidney disease, inflammatory bowel diseases, and food allergies, in order to deliver tailored recommendations and targeted preventive alerts. Furthermore, its database was developed in accordance with Algerian food labeling regulations, ensuring the reliability of the information provided. Consequently, DZsain serves as a digital decision-support tool that promotes nutritional awareness and contributes to the prevention of chronic diseases in Algeria.
