Abstract

Iron-deficiency anemia due to martial-deficiency and Type 2 Diabetes triggered by a high-calorie diet, obesity and lifestyle changes dominated by inactivity are major public health problems nationally and internationally. The objective of this study was to monitor the effects of age and gender on changes in selected hematological and glycaemic parameters in T2DM on metformin therapy. The experiment was carried out on a population of 351 anemic and diabetic cases admitted to the Medical Analysis Laboratory Dr. S. HAMROUCHE, Mostaganem during the year 2023 over a period of six months. The medical profile of all patients was determined by fasting plasma glucose, HBA1C and complete blood count. This study shows that: • The age group of anemic cases most affected by DM2 is 16 to 69 years with a female predominance of 60. 97%. • Fifty-one % of patients have HB deficiency followed by 42% have red blood cell and HB deficiency and only 7% have a decrease in red blood cell with a normal HB level. • More than 88% of cases use metformine regularly. Overall, our results show that there is a bidirectional relationship between anemia and DM2 and metformine administration is associated with a decrease in vitamin B12 levels due to malabsorption, putting the patient at risk of severe anemia.
