Abstract

Abstract: The textile industry is one of the major sources of environmental pollution, particularly due to the discharge of wastewater containing synthetic dyes that are difficult to degrade. In response to this challenge, the search for cost-effective andsustainable solutions for treating these effluents has become essential. In this context, the present work focuses on the valorization of cotton dust, a commonly neglected textilewaste, as a natural biosorbent for the removal of Methylene Blue (BM) fromcontaminated water. The characterization analyses showed that the prepared biosorbent exhibited goodadsorption properties, with an iodine number of 106.62 mg/g and a methylene blue indexof 178.61 mg/g. The optimum adsorption conditions were achieved at a contact timeof 30 min, pH 6, and a biosorbent dose of 0.15 g, resulting in a removal efficiency of morethan 98%. Adsorption isotherm analysis indicated that the Freundlich model providedthe best fit to the experimental data, while the Langmuir model estimated a maximumadsorption capacity (qmax) of 322.58 mg/g. Furthermore, the kinetic study revealedthat the adsorption process follows the pseudo-second-order model, and the thermodynamicstudy confirmed that the adsorption process is spontaneous and thermodynamicallyfavorable.
