Abstract

The experimental study is devoted to the evaluation of the antimicrobial effects of the hydromethanolic solvent extract of laurel (Laurus nobilis) collected in the region of mostaganemAlgeria on Staphylococcus aureus, a pathogenic microorganisms responsible for food poisoning. The bay leaf extract was obtained by maceration of an intake of the plant in aqueous methanol, followed by filtration and evaporation of the filtrate. The extract was concentrated in 0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100% distilled water. The antimicrobial effect of bay leaf extract was tested on a reference strain (ATCC 33862) of S. aureus. The measurements concerned: the growth test, the disk diffusion test, the minimum inhibitory concentration and the minimum bactericidal concentration. Solutions of Laurus nobilis extract produced strong antimicrobial activities against S. aureus. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (CMB) were obtained with hydromethanolic extract of laurel prepared at 40%. This extract showed a bactericidal type action in Staphylococcus aureus and an antilicrobial efficacy close to 61.9% of gentamicin
