Résumé:
The flora of Algeria is important for the development of aromatic and medicinal plants. Cestrum nocturnum is a cultivated ornamental plant of the Solanaceae family, it has biological properties. The present study was designed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of methanolic, aqueous extracts and essential oils of Cestrum nocturnum. The antibacterial effect was determined on four bacterial strains using the disc diffusion method. The results revealed that the methanolic extract has a broader spectrum of antibacterial activity. The extracts showed that the plant is rich in glycosides, alkaloids, saponins, phenols, flavonoids, tannins. Phenolic compounds in linear correlation with antibacterial activity. As a conclusion, Cestrum nocturnum extracts are an alternative against bacterial infections and as a development of new antibacterial agents.
