The objective of this work is to study the antimicrobial power of aqueous extracts (infusion and decoction) and the methonolic extract of green cypress (Cupressus sempervirens L). An ethnobotanical survey took its part in the knowledge of Cypress as a medicinal plant among the local population.
The evaluation of antimicrobial activity by the antibiogram method on three bacterial strains, including two bacterial strains of Gram + (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus), one bacterial strain of Gram- (Proteus mirabilis) revealed a remarkable sensitivity of Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus with respect to aqueous extracts (60%, leaf infusion), (58% fruit infusion) respectively. This sensitivity is low for Proteus mirabilis (33% leaf decoction). Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus are more sensitive to the methanolic extract of the leaves 55%, 52% respectively. However, Proteus mirabilis presents a resistant methanolic extract by absence of zone of inhibition.
It appears that the local population is familiar with the Green Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens L), its benefits and its use to treat Covid-19.
