Abstract
This study aims to investigate the physiological impact of specialized swimming
practice on lung vital capacity. The research compares three groups of students
from the Institute of Physical Education and Sports: first-year students, third-year
students specializing in volleyball, and third-year students specializing in
swimming. A descriptive-analytical methodology was adopted, and a purposive
sample of 36 male students was selected, equally divided into the three groups.
Lung vital capacity was measured once for each participant using a spirometer,
and the data were analyzed using the Student t-test.
The findings revealed statistically significant differences in lung vital capacity
among the groups. The swimming group demonstrated the highest values,
followed by the volleyball group, while the first-year group recorded the lowest.
These results confirm the study’s main hypothesis and the sub -hypotheses,
indicating that swimming is one of the most effective sports in enhancing
respiratory function. This is due to its reliance on regulated breathing techniques
and breath control underwater, which help strengthen respiratory muscles and
improve lung elasticity.
The study concluded that integrating swimming-based training elements into
physical education programs, even in non-aquatic sports, can significantly
enhance respiratory efficiency. It further recommends conducting future studies
on other physiological indicators and expanding the sample size to include
different institutions, in order to generalize the results.
