Abstract

Abstract
Dyes, whether organic or inorganic, have always posed health and environmental problems.
The first objective of this study is the valorization of animal waste, specifically chicken bones,
for the preparation of bone char. Among two dyes pre-tested, Azorubine was selected because
it exhibits a high affinity for the prepared material, unlike Rhodamine B. The second objective
is therefore the application of this material as an adsorbent for the removal of Azorubine, used
as a model organic pollutant in an aqueous medium.
The characterization of the bone char consisted of determining its point of zero charge (pHpzc).
The evaluation of the iodine and methylene blue indices shows that this material possesses an
interesting porous structure for the intended application.
The effect of several adsorption parameters, such as contact time, solution pH, adsorbent dose,
and temperature, was studied in a batch system.
The adsorption of Azorubine onto bone char exhibits a type L isotherm profile. The application
of Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin models allowed for the description of the adsorption
equilibrium behavior. The Langmuir model offered the best fit, with a maximum adsorption
capacity (qmax) of 50.50 mg/g.
The surface interactions are thermodynamically spontaneous, with proven affinity between the
adsorbent and the adsorbate.
Key words: Adsorption, bone char, chicken bones, Azorubine, Isotherms, pollution
